Surge & Spike Protection
Robust, Reliable, Energy efficient – Outdoor luminaires need to perform a wide variety of tasks. Innovative LED lighting solutions in COMM's Outdoor Lighting portfolio meet the highest demands, provide high protection and simplify the configuration of Street lighting. Lightning strikes are electrostatic discharges, typically millions of volts from clouds to the ground. Lightning strikes occurring near interconnected grid energy transmission and distribution lines can cause very high voltage fluctuations in current-carrying aluminum or copper wires.
There are 3 main reasons for excessive and sudden voltage spikes ;
- Atmospheric Natural Phenomena such as Lightning
- Switching Fluctuations Caused by Industrial Loads
- Electrostatic Discharges (ESD)
Overvoltages differ in amplitude, duration and frequency.
Surge - Spike Voltage and Current Protection :
Optional surge protector is being used in order to protect our high technology indoor and outdoor lighting luminaries against low or high surge voltages that may occur due to network or natural disasters just like lightning, thunder, etc. which may harm drivers and LEDs. SPD directs or absorbs the overvoltage energy, minimizing the overvoltage threats that may come from the grid.
We prefer to use surge protector systems that are classified belong to testing conditions category B and C with protection values between 6kV/3kA and 10kV/10kA according to products power values, implementation areas and related standards IEC 61643, ANSI & IEEE C62.41 This type of protection items protects all system against surge voltages that occur between 1 and 50 microsecond intervals.
We prefer placing 3 element surge protectors which can provide protection for L-N , L-G and N-G lines, in our products. Likewise, other components in the products as cable, connector etc are chosen in order to resist to incoming pulsed surge voltages.
SPD modules we use in our products;
It includes thermal protected Varistor technology and the LED indicator (End of life indication) on it shows when to replace the SPD.
